Honors Programs to be offered at NCCS High School NCCS has many students who demonstrate excellent academic potential. It is the responsibility of our school to provide academic courses and opportunities that will best prepare these outstanding students for successful college careers. Therefore, it is my pleasure to announce the creation of a high school honors program that will meet the needs of these top students. Our honors program will be a series of courses offered in math, science, social studies, and ELA. These courses will be reserved for top performing students at all grade levels who have successfully completed the application process and who have been selected for participation by a committee of teachers and administrators. Students who have achieved at least a 90 average over the last four quarters in a particular subject area will be recommended to apply for admission to the honors program in that subject area. Students do not have to be selected for honors in all four subject areas to be part of the program. They can apply for up to four honors courses. In order to apply for a particular honors course, a student must: Fill out an application Write a brief essay explaining why they want to be an honors student Take a competency test in the particular academic area Provide a recommendation from a teacher in that academic area Provide a character recommendation from another teacher It is our belief that an honors program will benefit our students in many ways. Having top students grouped together in an honors course will allow teachers to cover more material and to go into more depth on topics of particular interest. The extra material covered and the increased rigor of the courses will better prepare our students for courses in college. Their participation in an honors program will also make them more attractive to top colleges and make them more competitive when applying for college scholarships. If you would like to learn more about the NCCS High School Honors Program, please check out our website and click on a link for Honors Program. There you will find a slide show that outlines the rationale for the program as well as the application procedure.
