HIGH SCHOOL TESTS SUCH AS REGENTS AND RCTS

Students take the Regents exams in the high school to receive a Regents diploma or an advanced Regents diploma. If students have difficulty passing these exams and are designated as Special Education students, they are allowed to take an RCT in that content area to receive a local diploma or an IEP diploma.  All students, except a very few Special Education students receiving an IEP diploma, must take the Regents exams.  Some Special Education students will take both the Regents and the RCT exams.

Starting with our freshman class for 2005-06, they must each pass at least two Regents exams with a grade of 65 or better during their high school career.  The Freshman class for 2006-07 will need to pass three Regents exams with a 65 or better.  For the next two years after, each entering Freshman class will need to pass 4 and then 5 Regents with a 65 or better.

Mandatory Regents exams are English 11, Math A, Global Studies, US History, and at least one science such as Earth Science or Living Environment.  Elective Regents are Chemistry, Physics, Math B, French and Spanish. We would like all students to score in the 90’s, but at the least, a grade of 85 or better.  Students may retake a Regents as many times as they wish to raise their grade.  The highest of the test scores is used; the lower grades are discarded.

Just as in the elementary and middle grades, student grades are level 1 through level 4.  They break down the following:

Level 1 – 0 – 54% on a Regents or don’t pass the RCT

Level 2 – 55 – 64% on a Regents or pass the RCT

Level 3 – 65 – 84% on the Regents

Level 4 – 85 to 100% on the Regents
